The Promoting Free and Fair Elections Act of 2023 seeks to limit the involvement of federal agencies in voter registration activities and prohibit the use of federal funds for agreements with non-governmental organizations to conduct voter registration or mobilization efforts. This bill would abrogate Executive Order 14019 which aimed to promote access to voting and require agencies to report on prior voter registration activities carried out under the order. It would also prohibit Federal Work-Study programs from involving voter registration or mobilization activities on or off campus. Curtailing efforts to facilitate voter registration and participation undermines core democratic principles and threatens to disenfranchise eligible voters. I urge you to oppose this bill which creates unnecessary barriers to the electoral process and impedes efforts to increase civic engagement. Protecting and expanding voting rights is crucial for a healthy, representative democracy.
