Organizations like Kids' Food Basket, which rely heavily on Feeding America West Michigan for supplies from regional farms, are also feeling the effects. At a time when inflation is already making it challenging to meet demand, reducing access to food assistance programs exacerbates the problem for food banks and the farmers in their networks. Despite these obstacles, Feeding America West Michigan and Kids' Food Basket remain unwavering in their commitment to ensuring no one goes hungry and aiding local agriculture. However, they should not have to shoulder this burden alone. The freeze on USDA funding for the Emergency Food Assistance Program must be lifted immediately to support the essential work of these organizations in addressing food insecurity and sustaining regional food systems. Continued access to these resources is crucial for maintaining a robust emergency food supply, meeting the needs of vulnerable populations, and supporting local farmers.
