Americans have worked hard and earned their Social Security – and we elect lawmakers to protect and strengthen it. As one of your constituents, I’m asking you to protect Social Security from closed-door decision making by unelected or fast-track commissions that bypass regular order.
Social Security is a lifeline for millions; it is our money, and we have earned it. We expect any decision about it to be made transparently and with accountability through the already established committees that have the expertise and authority over their issues. Regular order is the gold standard in Congress for passing bills, and something as important as Social Security should certainly receive the gold standard.
I ask that you make sure any proposals or changes to Social Security are done through the proper legislative channels and with full transparency to the American people. As you are doing so, I ask that you work to protect and strengthen it for the 70 million Americans who count on it, and the millions more who will.
