I am writing to express my deep disappointment and disgust regarding the disgraceful treatment of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during his February 28th visit to the White House. What should have been a diplomatic meeting between allies was instead turned into a public ambush, designed to humiliate and strong-arm a leader whose country remains under brutal assault by Russia.
The way in which President Zelenskyy was met with open hostility—being accused of ingratitude and publicly undermined—was not only undignified but also strategically reckless. At a time when Ukraine is fighting for its very survival, your administration’s decision to treat its leader with disdain rather than statesmanship sends a dangerous message to both our allies and adversaries.
Compounding this disgrace was the fact that Russian state media was present in the White House while this debacle unfolded. The very same propagandists who have spent years justifying Putin’s war crimes were given a front-row seat to witness and report on the United States demeaning an ally in real-time. Whether through incompetence or deliberate intent, this decision only served to empower the Kremlin and weaken Ukraine’s position on the world stage.
The American people have stood with Ukraine against Russian aggression, and many of us are appalled by the way this administration has chosen to treat a wartime leader seeking support. If this administrations goal was to showcase strength, all they have done is embolden those who seek to divide and destroy democracy.
This meeting was not diplomacy; it was a spectacle of disgrace. The White House should be a place where allies are met with respect, not cornered into political theater for the benefit of adversarial regimes. This administration’s actions on February 28th were an embarrassment to American leadership, and history will remember them as such.
I am writing to you today to request a response of what you and other members of our congress are doing to take action to support our allies and Ukraine in the face of betrayal by the Trump administration?
