Israel's widespread use of white phosphorus munitions in populated areas of south Lebanon is putting civilians at grave risk and contributing to severe displacement, with at least 173 people injured from exposure as of May 28. This indiscriminate use of airburst white phosphorus over residential buildings in villages like Boustane, Kafr Kila, Mays al-Jabal, Markaba, and Aita al-Chaab is unlawful and inflicts cruel injuries. White phosphorus can burn down to the bone and cause multiple organ failure, with already-treated wounds reigniting when exposed to oxygen again. While alternatives like the M150 smoke projectile are available, Israel continues using white phosphorus despite the horrific civilian harm it causes. A ceasefire is urgently needed to halt the suffering, and funding should be cut for arms enabling such indiscriminate attacks. Instead, support for UNRWA providing vital aid to displaced civilians must be reinstated. This unlawful and inhumane use of white phosphorus undermines any claims of discrimination and necessitates immediate action to protect Lebanese civilians.
