An Open Letter

To: Sen. Gillibrand, Sen. Schumer, Rep. Goldman

From: A verified voter in Brooklyn, NY

May 11

I'm writing as a constituent furious about the response to the Virginia Supreme Court's 4-3 decision throwing out a redistricting amendment that Virginia voters approved at the ballot box. Four unelected judges overturned an election on a procedural technicality from a 1902 law, while Republicans in Texas, Florida, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Alabama are openly mid-decade gerrymandering to lock in House control. And the response from too many Democratic leaders has been to 'respect the decision' and pivot to 'making our voices heard in November.' That is not a strategy. That is a concession. I want to know what you, specifically, are doing to fight this. Not a statement of disappointment. Not a fundraising email. Concrete action: backing the emergency appeal, pressuring Governor Spanberger and the General Assembly to use every remaining legal and legislative tool, and treating this with the urgency Republicans treat every one of their power plays. Republicans understand that politics is about power. They redistrict, they pack courts, they change rules, and they do not apologize for it. Democrats keep losing because they keep playing a game whose rules the other side stopped following a decade ago. If the party cannot develop a spine and respond in kind, within the law but without the hand-wringing, there will not be a functioning democracy left to protect by the time leadership decides it's worth fighting for. Please tell me what you are doing. A form response will not be acceptable.
