Pass An Assault Weapons Ban Now

To: Pres. Biden, Rep. Stevens, Sen. Stabenow, Sen. Peters

From: A verified voter in West Bloomfield, MI

September 4

I am writing to you as a constituent filled with grief, fear, and anger. As we reel from one mass shooting after another (including the one currently ongoing at Apalachee High School in GA), not to mention the countless acts of daily preventable gun violence in communities across the country, I am urging you to take action to ban assault weapons by supporting and working to advance bills like The Assault Weapons Ban of 2023 (S.23/H.R. 698) and The GOSAFE Act (S.3369/H.R. 8600). There's a common thread in mass shootings that makes them even deadlier: the use of an assault weapon—a weapon designed for use on the battlefield, to kill as many people as possible as quickly as possible. We must pass an assault weapons ban. Our children have a right not to be gunned down at school. We have a right to be in public without being shot. These tragedies aren't the norm in our peer nations—and they shouldn't be our norm. Researchers estimate that if the federal law prohibiting assault weapons and high-capacity magazines had been in effect from 2005 through 2019, it would have prevented 30 mass shootings that resulted in 1,478 people being shot and killed or wounded. Please, I'm urging you to prioritize public safety by supporting legislation such as S.23/H.R. 698 or S.3369/H.R. 8600, both of which would regulate these deadly weapons. Take action and save lives by passing an assault weapons ban.
