Reject the Big Ugly Bill

To: Rep. Schakowsky, Sen. Duckworth, Sen. Durbin

From: A constituent in Chicago, IL

May 21

I am writing to express deep outrage over the recent late-night votes advancing the so-called “budget reconciliation” package—votes that took place deliberately outside of public view and without full debate. As your constituent, I demand to know: Why are these critical decisions for the future of our country being made in the dead of night? It is deeply disturbing to witness Congress sidestep transparency in a process that touches nearly every aspect of American life for the next decade. This bill contains provisions that will: * Slash Medicaid and SNAP, harming the most vulnerable among us, * Open up public lands for sale, including 11,000 acres in Nevada and Utah, with no clear purpose or public consultation, * Rollback environmental safeguards, including fast-tracking mining and oil projects, * Expand tax cuts for billionaires, while low-income Americans will ultimately face a greater tax burden, * Undermine regulation of artificial intelligence and personal data, with no public oversight. Each of these measures deserves individual scrutiny, public hearings, and an open, transparent vote—not to be buried in an omnibus package rushed through committees with last-minute amendments and zero accountability. What’s happening right now represents a dangerous erosion of democratic norms. Members of Congress are elected to serve the public, not billionaires and industry lobbyists. If this bill is sound policy, it should be debated in broad daylight, not rammed through behind closed doors when the press and public are asleep. I urge you to take a stand: * Refuse to vote on any further versions of this bill until its full text is released to the public, * Demand time for independent analysis and public debate, * Reject any process that circumvents your constituents’ right to understand and respond to legislation of this scale. This is not governance. This is manipulation. And if you remain silent, or worse, complicit in this process, you are betraying the people you were elected to serve. Do your duty. Make this bill public. Debate it honestly. And stop hiding from the people.
