I am writing to express my deep concern over the United States' recent ultimatum to Ukraine regarding a peace agreement with Russia. The November 27 deadline imposed on Ukraine to sign a peace plan is not only coercive but also undermines our own nation's security by throwing away our commitment to supporting our allies, democracy, and sovereignty worldwide.
The proposed 28-point peace plan, developed by Steve Witkoff with Russian involvement, essentially demands Ukrainian capitulation. It includes transferring parts of Donbas to Russia and significantly reducing Ukraine's military capabilities. This is not a fair negotiation; it's a thinly veiled attempt to reward Russian aggression.
Forcing Ukraine to accept these terms by threatening to halt weapons supplies and intelligence sharing is a dangerous precedent. It signals to aggressors worldwide that violence and territorial conquest will be rewarded, potentially triggering more conflicts globally. This approach jeopardizes not only Ukraine's future but also US and international security and the credibility of the United States as a reliable ally.
European leaders have rightly criticized this plan as a 'capitulation of Ukraine.' We should be aligning with our European allies, not working against one another.
I urge you to reject this coercive peace plan and instead advocate for continued support of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. We must stand firm in our commitment to our allies and the principles of international law. Abandoning Ukraine now would embolden future aggressors and destabilize global security.
Please use your influence to ensure that any peace negotiations are conducted without ultimatums and with full respect for Ukraine's right to self-determination. The November 27 deadline must be rescinded, and genuine diplomatic efforts should be pursued that do not reward aggression or compromise the security of our allies. The stakes are too high to allow a hasty, unjust resolution that will lead to further conflict in the near future.
