I’m writing to urge you to strongly oppose the newly announced HUD funding rules that will restrict who can receive housing and homelessness services. These changes are harmful, unnecessary, and will deepen the housing crisis in communities across our state.
The new rules do not improve accountability or outcomes. Instead, they cut people off from assistance during a time when housing costs are rising, wages are not keeping pace, and many families are already one emergency away from losing stability. These policies will reduce the number of people programs can serve, increase homelessness, and force agencies to turn away residents who urgently need support.
We need housing policies that actually work — policies grounded in evidence, compassion, and long-term community well-being. Every major study shows that stable housing improves employment, school attendance, health outcomes, and public safety. Cutting off access to assistance does the opposite. It pushes people further into crisis and costs taxpayers more in the long run.
These HUD rule changes are not solutions. They are obstacles. They do nothing to address rising rents, lack of affordable housing, stagnant wages, or the shortage of shelter beds. Instead, they create confusion, red tape, and harm for people who are simply trying to keep a roof over their heads.
Please use your voice and your influence to oppose these harmful restrictions, call on HUD to reverse them, and advocate for policies that strengthen — not weaken — housing stability. Our communities need support, not punishment. We are asking you to stand with the people you represent and protect access to critical housing services.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent issue.
