Protect citizens from unchecked Al harm and support ethical innovation!
The proposed 10-year moratorium on state Al regulation is deeply concerning and could leave citizens vulnerable to the unchecked harm by artificial intelligence technologies. While the intent may be to foster innovation, a complete lack of guardrails risks enabling exploitation, discrimination, privacy violations, and other abuses by companies deploying Al systems. State legislatures have been proactive in addressing emerging Al issues like deepfakes, algorithmic bias, and Al-driven disinformation, filling a vacuum left by federal inaction. Preempting these efforts would be an abdication of responsibility to protect the public interest. Rather than a blanket moratorium, Congress should work expeditiously to establish a robust national framework for Al governance that empowers federal agencies and complements state laws. This framework should enshrine key principles like algorithmic transparency, human oversight, and anti-discrimination safeguards. Until such protections are in place, state laws remain vital for holding Al developers and deployers accountable.
Responsible innovation requires both fostering technological progress and upholding democratic values of fairness, privacy, and justice. An outright ban on Al regulation for a decade would undermine these priorities and jeopardize public trust. I urge you to reject this harmful proposal and instead advance legislation that promotes ethical Al development and deployment in service of the greater good.
