Dear Senators Schumer and Gillibrand, and Representative Espaillat,
I am writing as your constituent to express my deep outrage and alarm about the current surge in Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity — including documented constitutional violations, the detention of U.S. citizens, and the escalating use of force that is terrorizing communities across the country.
Recent lawsuits and reporting show allegations of unlawful arrests and civil rights violations, including racial profiling and detentions without cause.
In Minneapolis and elsewhere, local leaders and state governments have been forced to sue the federal government to stop these operations and defend basic civil liberties.
Senator Schumer has urged the administration to withdraw ICE from cities because of the harm being caused — but I still have to ask: Where are you and my other NY congressional leaders in this crisis??
Instead of focusing on offshore wind projects or infrastructure plans, we are facing what many see as an authoritarian push against constitutional rights and civil liberties in real time.
Many New Yorkers — immigrants, citizens, and their families — feel unsafe and unprotected.
The city itself has faced detentions that raise serious questions about due process.
I demand to know:
1. What concrete actions are you taking to protect New Yorkers — citizens and immigrants alike — whose rights are being violated?
2. Are you actively pushing for federal oversight, legislative reforms, and budgetary constraints on ICE to prevent constitutional abuses?
3. What public statements and oversight actions have you taken in the past 30 days specifically regarding this crisis?
This is not a peripheral issue.
The constitutional crisis is real, and New Yorkers deserve leadership that confronts it directly.
Respectfully,
