Reject any settlement that would pay President Trump taxpayer dollars in his $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS and Treasury Department. This case should be dismissed, not settled at public expense.
The President controls both sides of this litigation. His administration's Department of Justice is negotiating with his own legal team over how much taxpayer money he should receive. This isn't normal government litigation. It's a conflict of interest that undermines the integrity of our justice system.
Trump's lawsuit stems from a contractor's 2019-2020 theft of his tax information. That contractor pleaded guilty in 2023. But the solution to that crime cannot be the President extracting billions from the Treasury he controls. Any settlement would effectively let Trump write himself a check using public funds.
Former government officials have already filed a brief warning that treating this case like business as usual threatens the justice system and taxpayer protections. They're right. Block any settlement negotiations and oppose any appropriation of funds for this purpose. The American people should not be forced to pay damages to a sitting president suing his own government.
