I am writing as a constituent to strongly oppose the U.S. Forest Service proposal that would open most of the Conecuh National Forest to oil and gas leasing.
The Conecuh National Forest is one of the last remaining longleaf pine ecosystems in the country. It provides critical habitat for wildlife, protects water resources, and serves as an important recreational and natural space for our community. Opening more than 80,000 acres of this forest to drilling puts these irreplaceable resources at serious risk.
Industrial oil and gas development is incompatible with the long-term conservation, ecological health, and public use of this forest. Once damaged, these ecosystems cannot simply be restored. I am deeply concerned about the potential impacts on wildlife, groundwater, air quality, and the character of a forest that belongs to the public.
I urge you to oppose this proposal and to advocate for the permanent protection of the Conecuh National Forest. Please support policies that prioritize conservation, responsible land stewardship, and the long-term well-being of our environment and communities.
Thank you for your time and for representing the interests of those who value Alabama’s natural heritage. I appreciate your attention to this matter and look forward to your response.
