I’m writing because it’s time to stand up for our democracy against the escalating abuses of power by President Trump and his administration. Those aligned with this agenda do not respect the rule of law or our republic's principles.
Recently, DHS agents stormed Rep. Jerry Nadler’s office, handcuffing an aide without a warrant, claiming they were “harboring rioters” by aiding immigration advocates (Vanity Fair, June 2025). This is part of a troubling pattern—Rep. LaMonica McIver was charged with intervening in a federal arrest, and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka faced a similar backlash for supporting immigrant rights (Reuters, May 2025).
In just the first 100 days of his second term, Trump has weaponized the government against over 100 perceived enemies, including journalists and former officials like Dr. Fauci (NPR, April 2025). He has cut funding to NPR and PBS for unfavorable coverage, targeted law firms for representing critical clients, and attacked Harvard’s ability to enroll international students (The Guardian, June 2025).
This is not how democracy works; it should be about debate and dissent, not intimidation. If elected officials can be targeted, who’s next?
I urge you to:
- Publicly condemn these abuses of power.
- Support legislation limiting the executive branch’s targeting of opponents.
- Demand investigations and accountability for these actions.
We need leaders across the political spectrum to speak up and defend our Constitution now.
