Protect the Arctic

To: Sen. Markey, Sen. Warren, Rep. Moulton

From: A constituent in Lynn, MA

October 26

I’m writing to urge Congress to push back on the Trump regime's repeal of the Roadless Conservation Rule to increase timber production on our public lands and national forests. This move will destroy our public lands, harm wildlife, and compromise our safety, air and water quality. In addition to removing the Roadless Area Conservation rule, which will result in clear cutting hundreds if not thousands of acres of pristine old growth forests (which are key habitants and a nexus of biodiversity), Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum has opened 1.56 MILLION acres of the Coastal Plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas leasing. This unacceptable action only serves the robber Barons of the oil and gas industry. Americans will not benefit from either of these moves as prices for timber, oil, and natural gas will more than likely not decrease regardless of an influx in supply because of the unchecked corporate greed of the fossil fuel industry especially. Congress must act in the defense of our SHARED natural environment, the wildlife that calls it home, and the American people who visit, live on, and otherwise utilize our environment. I ask that you pass legislation preventing the removal of the "Roadless Area Conservation Rule" and prohibiting the leasing of any land in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas companies. This pristine tract of land must be protected along with the wildlife and Native Peoples that call it home.
