The Department of Housing and Urban Development's refusal to approve Asheville's $225 million disaster recovery plan due to the inclusion of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) measures is concerning. Eliminating support for minority and women-owned businesses from the plan undercuts efforts to rebuild an inclusive economy after the devastation of Hurricane Helene. Prioritizing DEI initiatives is vital for an equitable recovery that uplifts all residents, especially historically marginalized communities disproportionately impacted by disasters. I urge you to reconsider this decision and approve the full recovery plan as initially proposed by Asheville. An inclusive approach that actively promotes equity is essential for building long-term resilience and prosperity in our communities.
