I am a teacher and a veteran who still believes that character counts. Congressman Al Green showed true courage in his opposition to the President’s speech. He knew what might happen if he refused to yield and chose to resist anyway. We, the People, stand with him. I have to believe that more Democrats and even brave Republicans will join him in vocally resisting tyranny before we sink further into constitutional crisis. It is never too late for redemption. I will vote for anyone- Democrat, Republican, or Independent- who stands up to hate and bullying. Those who would strip us of constitutional rights, dismantle or privatize hard-earned benefits, turn their backs on veterans, and abandon/blackmail other democracies will be judged by history as cowards and traitors. Reducing waste and fraud are worthwhile goals, but not at the expense of our constitution. Protecting our citizens is essential, but we don’t have to dehumanize whole groups of people to do it. This is America, and it is not too late to act like it. President Trump and VP Vance have clearly chosen authoritarian regimes as their model. Congress will never agree on everything, but they have the power to put things right if they work together on the important issues. Instead, our elected representatives have ceded power to a president with authoritarian delusions. I believe that most Americans want many of the same things. But the hope of moderation (an important goal to me) is dormant until more individuals stand up and show courage like Congressman Green, whether that means small acts of civil disobedience or crossing the aisle on a vote. Thank you for your time.
