Money Is Not Speech — Follow Hawaii and Montana’s Lead   I am writing as your constituent to ask you to take action on one of the most urgent threats to our democracy: the unlimited flow of corporate and dark money into our elections. The 2010 Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United v. FEC opened the floodgates. Since then, corporate and special-interest spending has exploded — over one billion dollars in anonymous dark money was spent in the 2024 presidential election alone. Our voices as ordinary citizens are being drowned out by corporations that were created by the state, empowered by the state, and owe their very existence to the state. Money is not speech. Corporations are not people. Two states are already showing us the way forward. Hawaii just became the first state in the nation to sign into law a bill that strips corporations of the power to spend in state elections — not by defying Citizens United, but by recognizing that states never had to grant that power to corporations in the first place. Montana is heading toward a 2026 ballot measure using the same groundbreaking legal logic, with bipartisan support from 74% of Montana voters, including majorities of Republicans, Democrats, and independents. This approach is not radical. It is foundational. States create corporations. States define the powers those corporations receive. States can choose not to give corporations the power to spend in our politics. I am asking you to sponsor or co-sponsor legislation in our state modeled on Hawaii’s SB 2471 and the Montana Plan. I am asking you to use your platform to advocate for this approach publicly. I am asking you to stand on the side of your constituents — the human beings who actually vote — rather than the artificial entities whose political spending undermines every vote we cast. Democracy belongs to the people. Please act like it does. Money Is Not Speech — Follow Hawaii and Montana’s Lead
