I am absolutely appalled that the House of Representatives is targeting trans employees and elected officials. Bathroom exclusion bills are always forms of harassment, and the speakers proclamation that bathrooms will be policed for genitals is abhorrent. I do not know what you can do to reverse Speaker Johnson’s whims. However, I know you can extend structural and cultural, welcoming, and belonging interventions. Ensure that there is bathroom safety for all employees. Ensure there are single use bathrooms that are easily accessible. Ensure that workplace harassment is unacceptable at our highest levels of government. Political violence is a growing problem in the United States. When it is modeled at this level and perpetrated by our leadership, we are in grave trouble. Maine included gender diversity in our human rights act almost 20 years ago. The Maine delegation should protect these values in policy and in your interactions and in your speech.
