Congress must act now instead of relying on courts to stop Trump’s economy- and trade-damaging tariff agenda. Mr. Trump’s announcement of 100% tariffs on generic drugmakers starting in August 2028, rising to 200% after one year, threatens to raise costs for the generic drugs that account for roughly 90% of U.S. prescriptions and to disrupt supply chains that already depend heavily on global sourcing. This approach also risks worsening inflation, reducing access to affordable medicines, and harming domestic manufacturing competitiveness rather than “reshoring” it. Please immediately move legislation to prevent these harmful generic drug tariffs from taking effect, require a transparent cost-and-impact analysis before any tariff changes affecting essential medicines, and pursue targeted, evidence-based policies that actually strengthen domestic generic production and supply resilience without pricing families out of necessary treatment.
