I urge the administration to reconsider the proposal to deport nearly 200,000 Ukrainians using foreign aid funds intended for humanitarian assistance. With the ongoing war in Ukraine, many refugees do not have homes or a safe environment to return to. Forcibly sending them back would be inhumane and put their lives at risk. The United States has a long-standing tradition of providing refuge to those fleeing conflict and violence. Deporting Ukrainians contradicts these ideals and undermines our commitment to protecting the vulnerable. Furthermore, diverting congressionally appropriated funds meant for refugee resettlement towards deportation efforts raises ethical concerns and potentially violates the intended use of these resources. Instead of coercing refugees to return through financial incentives, we should prioritize their well-being and safety until the situation in Ukraine stabilizes. I implore the administration to uphold our nation's values of compassion and human rights by allowing Ukrainians to remain in the United States until conditions permit their safe and voluntary repatriation. This program not only threatens lives but also tarnishes our global reputation as a beacon of hope for the persecuted.
