I urge you to use the full extent of U.S. diplomatic influence to oppose the execution of a 26-year-old Iranian protester. Carrying out this execution would represent an irreversible act taken in a context that lacks due process, justice, and basic humanity. This moment is critical. How the international community responds will signal whether freedom of expression and the right to dissent are values we are truly willing to defend. I ask that the United States act decisively to help spare this individual’s life and to demonstrate, clearly and publicly, our commitment to human rights and freedom of speech.
