Demand for Accountability, Action, and Courage

To: Sen. Duckworth, Sen. Durbin, Rep. Schakowsky

From: A constituent in Algonquin, IL

January 17

I need to know exactly what you are doing for Illinois citizens and U.S. citizens regarding Trump and his clearly undisputed actions to become a dictator. I am an Illinois resident and U.S. citizen who is profoundly angry by the continued erosion of democratic norms and the near-total absence of meaningful resistance from you to safeguard them. I ask plainly: what concrete actions have you taken to stop or meaningfully limit his power? Not statements of concern. Not strategic ambiguity. Not reassurances that “institutions will hold.” Specific actions. I demand to know. The burden of preserving democracy appears to have been transferred to ordinary citizens once again and as per usual. Hard working people that are raising families, paying taxes, going to work and school, and just trying to survive while those with actual authority posture, delay, or prioritize political longevity over constitutional duty. That is not leadership, it is abdication. Don't think that just because you consider yourself to be "on the right side of history" that your inaction won't be questioned when it comes time for answers. History is unambiguous about moments like this. Inaction is not neutrality. It is a choice and you will be condemned for it. We are watching. We are documenting. And we will remember who acted, and those who didn't. I expect a response grounded in specifics, not platitudes. I will not accept anything less. Have the day you deserve.
