The US State Department's findings of human rights violations committed by Israeli security forces in the West Bank underscore the urgent need for accountability and a change in approach. The continued armed conflict in Gaza has resulted in immense suffering and loss of life. It is crucial that a ceasefire be immediately implemented to halt further violence and create conditions for a just and lasting peace. Moreover, the US government should heed the State Department's assessment and suspend military aid to Israel until credible assurances are provided that US-supplied weapons are not being used to violate international humanitarian law. Instead, funding should be redirected to support humanitarian aid and relief efforts through organizations like UNRWA that are working to alleviate the dire situation in Gaza. The path forward requires taking principled action to end the cycle of violence and oppression. A ceasefire, coupled with cutting off military aid while restoring funding for UNRWA's vital work, can be an important step in that direction. This approach upholds human rights, provides humanitarian assistance, and creates space for a negotiated settlement addressing the root causes of this prolonged conflict.
