This is not common sense--it's voter disenfranchisement.
It has been illegal for noncitizens to vote since 1924. Fines and penalities, including imporisonment, have been in place since 1996. Noncitizens *already* face up to five years in federal prison for even attempting to REGISTER to vote. Study after study have provided data to suggest that attempts by noncitizens to vote are *extremely* rare. It's a non-issue.
Here are some truths about the SAVE Act: Its requirements are extreme and expensive.
43% of Americans do not have passports. It's quite expensive to get a passport; that's a poll tax. 69 million married women changed their names upon marriage so their names do not match their birth certificates. That's a specific form of disenfranchisement that incorporates a poll tax to address.
I cannot believe you are supporting this. It's a clear attempt to take the vote away from U.S. citizens under the guise of a bill to address what is a made-up problem.
With our abysmal voter turnout, the real problem is that we don't have enough citizens getting to the polls. You should be rallying to get citizens TO the polls, not making up reasons to keep them from voting.
Supporting the SAVE act is the most un-American thing you could do, really.
