I am writing to express my deep concern over former President Donald Trump’s recent promise to create holding facilities in Guantánamo Bay for migrants. This proposal, coupled with the rhetoric surrounding it, evokes alarming parallels to some of the darkest chapters in human history, particularly the rise of fascism in 1930s Europe and the atrocities committed during the Nazi regime from 1933 to 1945. The idea of detaining migrants in offshore facilities, under conditions that could easily devolve into inhumane treatment, risks creating modern-day concentration camps. Such policies not only violate fundamental human rights but also erode the moral fabric of our nation. History has shown us the dangers of dehumanizing any group of people, and we must not allow such practices to take root in the United States. I am deeply troubled by the direction in which our country is heading. The normalization of authoritarian rhetoric and policies threatens the very principles of democracy, equality, and justice that our nation was founded upon. Congress has a moral and constitutional obligation to act as a check against such dangerous proposals and to ensure that our government upholds the dignity and rights of all individuals, regardless of their immigration status. I urge you to take immediate action to: 1 Publicly condemn any proposal to establish migrant holding facilities in Guantánamo Bay or elsewhere under conditions that risk inhumane treatment. 2 Advocate for comprehensive immigration reform that prioritizes humane and just solutions. 3 Support legislation that safeguards against the erosion of civil liberties and the rise of authoritarian practices. The lessons of history are clear, and we must not repeat the mistakes of the past. I implore you to use your position to stand against policies that threaten to undermine our democracy and to fight for a future that upholds the values of compassion, justice, and human dignity.
