I am writing as your constituent to urge immediate congressional action on two fronts: reining in the President's use of unilateral tariff authority and reasserting Congress's constitutional role over decisions of war. The courts have already ruled against the administration's tariff actions once, yet those tariffs are being revived through other means. This pattern of using emergency powers to bypass Congress on trade policy deserves legislative pushback, not acquiescence. Tariffs function as a tax on American businesses and consumers, and that cost is landing squarely on working families right now. At the same time, recent economic data underscores the stakes. Government figures released this week show the economy grew at just a 1.5% annualized rate in the second quarter, down from 2.1% in the prior quarter and below what economists had forecast. Annual inflation has climbed to 3.5%, more than a point above the Federal Reserve's target, driven in part by an inflation surge tied to the conflict with Iran and the oil price shock that followed. Gas prices spiked as high as $4.56 a gallon in May before easing after a preliminary peace deal. Families are feeling this squeeze at the pump and at the checkout line. I urge you to: • Support legislation reasserting Congress's constitutional authority over tariffs, including measures to require congressional approval for tariffs imposed under emergency powers. • Support efforts to enforce War Powers Act obligations and require congressional authorization for continued military involvement in the Middle East. • Hold hearings examining the economic impact of both the tariffs and the war on American households. Congress was not designed to be a bystander while the executive branch unilaterally sets trade and war policy with direct consequences for the economy and for families like mine. I ask you to act.
