I am writing to demand you take immediate, decisive action in response to the President's recent statements and posts directed at Iran, which raise for me the gravest concerns about his lack of judgment and the risk of catastrophic escalation. We Americans cannot be left vulnerable to his impulsive threats or (even worse!) to actions that could endanger millions of lives and destabilize entire regions. Congress has not only the authority but the obligation to act. This is not a moment for symbolic opposition or procedural hedging. It is a time for concrete steps to prevent unlawful war, enforce constitutional limits, and uphold the rule of law. You must: • Return to Washington immediately, if you haven't done so already, and convene a pro forma session to address this dangerous time. • Insist that Congress exercise its exclusive authority over war powers and take all necessary steps to block any unauthorized military action. • Use the power of the purse without hesitation. No further funding should support reckless or unlawful executive conduct, starting now. • Pursue genuine accountability. Oversight must lead to consequences, including investigation of potential criminal abuses of power and possible war crimes. • Publicly commit to restoring respect for international law, including recognizing the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court and supporting U.S. cooperation with its proceedings. • Advance legislative reforms that align U.S. policy with international legal standards and ensure that those responsible for unlawful actions can and will be held accountable. I do not want to hear statements that merely “oppose” actions in principle while allowing them to proceed in practice. I expect a clear commitment to accountability, including the willingness to pursue prosecution where warranted and to support international legal mechanisms that ensure justice. If you are unwilling or unable to take these steps, then you should be honest about that reality and step down from Congress. The stakes are too high for performative opposition. The American people deserve representatives prepared to act with urgency, clarity, and courage in the face of profound danger.
