As I wrote previously regarding ICE actions in Chicago, Minnesota, and Washington, these incidents should have been stopped already. The recent fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston makes it clear that stronger congressional oversight and accountability are urgently needed.
According to reporting by the Associated Press, Mr. Salgado Araujo had no criminal convictions, was working toward legal status, and was driving a work crew to a homebuilding site when he was fatally shot during an ICE enforcement operation. His family has called for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
This case raises serious questions about the conduct of immigration enforcement operations, the use of force, and the protection of due process. It also has international implications, as Mexico has a legitimate interest in the treatment of its citizens.
I urge you to support a full, independent investigation into this incident and to press for stronger oversight of ICE to ensure that enforcement actions are conducted lawfully, transparently, and with respect for human life. Congress has a responsibility to ensure that federal agencies are accountable and that tragedies like this are thoroughly examined.
I ask that you make this matter a priority and work to advance meaningful reforms that protect both public safety and civil rights.
