Restore weather satellite data for hurricane forecasting

To: Sen. Alvarado-Gil, Sen. Schiff, Pres. Trump, Sen. Padilla, Asm. Patterson, Gov. Newsom, Rep. McClintock

From: A constituent in El Dorado Hills, CA

July 1

The abrupt termination of microwave data from Department of Defense weather satellites will severely hamper hurricane forecasting capabilities. This critical data provides detailed structural information on storms, enabling accurate tracking and intensity estimates. Without it, forecasters face increased risk of missing rapid intensification events, leading to delayed warnings for coastal residents. The rationale of security concerns does not justify compromising public safety by degrading forecasts during peak hurricane season. It is imperative that Congress intervenes to ensure continued access to this vital data for weather agencies. Funding and staffing cuts have already strained forecasting resources. Withholding satellite information will further diminish preparedness, ultimately costing more lives and property when communities cannot adequately brace for incoming storms. Restricting such data undermines national security rather than enhancing it. Congress must mandate the Department of Defense provide unrestricted real-time access to its weather satellite data for hurricane forecasting purposes. Reconciliation legislation should prioritize fully equipping, staffing, and funding NOAA, the National Weather Service, and NASA to maintain robust forecasting capabilities that protect American lives and infrastructure. Public safety demands access to the best available data and resources.
