Stop the trump regime's roller coaster of unconstitutional tariffs

To: Sen. Warren, Sen. Markey, Rep. Trahan

July 9

Congress must uphold its constitutional duty to impose tariffs and prevent the Trump regime from usurping this authority unlawfully. The Constitution explicitly grants Congress the sole power to "lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises." However, the President has ignored this limitation by announcing new worldwide tariffs of up to 40% on over a hundred countries without congressional approval. The U.S. Court of International Trade has already ruled that the President's attempt to impose unilateral, reciprocal tariffs is unconstitutional. Yet he persists, normalizing his lawlessness. These unlawful tariffs are directly harming American businesses and consumers. One company went from paying $5 million to $50 million per month in tariffs, leading to widespread layoffs. Consumers are being taxed through price hikes as the government has collected $22 billion in new tariffs, which are simply taxes on imports passed to consumers. Tariffs are causing job losses, inflation, and economic volatility. Congress must reassert its exclusive constitutional authority over tariffs. Allowing the President to violate the Constitution erodes the rule of law and system of checks and balances. Rein in this unlawful executive overreach by taking immediate action to block the President's unilateral imposition of tariffs worldwide. Uphold your sworn duty to defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.
