At the UN COP30 climate summit last November, Saudi Arabia led a group of petrostates in blocking any plan to phase out fossil fuels globally. The final text did not even mention “fossil fuels.” Yet a new opportunity is emerging.
From April 28-29, countries will meet in Colombia for the First International Conference on the Just Transition Away from Fossil Fuels. Unlike the UN summit, this conference will operate by majority rule and focus on economic realities rather than diplomatic wording. Governments, sub-national leaders, and activists will work together to create a roadmap for moving away from oil, gas, and coal without harming workers and communities.
The U.S. has a critical role to play in this global effort. Supporting participation in and implementation of initiatives from this conference aligns with both environmental responsibility and economic opportunity. I urge you to champion U.S. engagement in the transition away from fossil fuels and policies that ensure a just transition for affected workers and communities.
