While the intent to streamline or reorganize government agencies is understandable, completely closing the Department of Education would be detrimental to our education system. The Department plays a vital role in supporting public schools, promoting equal access to education, and providing funding for crucial programs like Title I aid for disadvantaged students and special education services. It also safeguards civil rights in education through its Office for Civil Rights. Instead of eliminating the Department, efforts should be made to address any inefficiencies or areas needing reform, while preserving its core functions that benefit students, educators, and communities nationwide. Discontinuing federal support and oversight in education could have severe unintended consequences, particularly for vulnerable populations. A more prudent approach would be to work closely with Congress, education stakeholders, and state/local leaders to strengthen and improve the Department's ability to serve the best interests of American students and their families. Rash decisions that undermine our public education system must be avoided.
