I am writing as a constituent deeply concerned about the GOP’s ongoing efforts to gut President Biden’s student loan repayment plans and, by extension, worsen the financial stability of millions of Americans — including myself.
The new Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) programs like SAVE are not giveaways; they are necessary corrections to a system that has trapped borrowers in decades of debt despite doing everything society told us to do: pursue higher education, work hard, and contribute to the economy. These programs simply allow borrowers to pay back their loans in a way that reflects their actual income, not an arbitrary figure set by decades-old policies and predatory interest practices.
The GOP’s moves to repeal or restrict these plans are reckless, shortsighted, and harmful. They will force borrowers — many of whom are already struggling with housing costs, inflation, and stagnant wages — into financial distress or default. That doesn’t just hurt borrowers; it drags down the entire economy.
I urge you to publicly oppose any legislation or resolutions aimed at dismantling the SAVE plan or restricting future improvements to student loan forgiveness programs. I also ask that you actively work to strengthen and expand these protections, not roll them back.
Student loan borrowers do not need more punishment. We need real solutions that reflect the economic realities of today, not the political talking points of decades past.
I expect your office to stand with working Americans — not against them. I look forward to your response.
