I’m writing to express urgent concern over the growing impact of artificial intelligence on the job market, particularly in white-collar sectors. A recent Axios report highlights that companies like Anthropic and OpenAI are rapidly advancing AI capabilities, which are already beginning to displace roles in customer service, finance, and law. We’re seeing a wave of layoffs in sectors once considered “safe” from automation — and this is just the beginning.
This is not theoretical. Executives interviewed in the article openly acknowledge plans to reduce hiring and consolidate teams as AI systems replace human labor. Some even admitted that roles like junior analyst or customer support could become obsolete within a few years.
Congress cannot afford to sit on the sidelines. We need urgent policy and economic responses, including:
• Expanding workforce retraining and education for displaced workers.
• Implementing strong guardrails on the deployment of AI in high-impact sectors.
• Creating a national strategy for ethical AI development that includes labor protections.
If we don’t act now, we risk repeating the economic shocks of past industrial shifts — but at an accelerated, irreversible pace. Please show leadership in treating this issue with the seriousness it demands.
