Oppose HR 7661, National Book Ban Bill

To: Sen. Durbin, Rep. Schakowsky, Sen. Duckworth

From: A constituent in Chicago, IL

March 18

I'm writing to ask you to oppose HR 7661. This legislation is a problem on numerous levels. It blurs the lines between obscenity and identity for already marginalized members of the LGBTQ community, in a way that both damages authors and isolates students who are part of that community. It represents federal overreach into decisions that should be left to local communities, and adds red tape to school book purchases. Most of all, it targets public education, one of the most important components of our democracy, and uses it as a weapon in an issue that crosses out of partisan politics and into basic human decency. Please, vote against this bill.
