Oppose Ban on Hemp-Derived THC Products

To: Rep. Schakowsky, Sen. Duckworth, Sen. Durbin

From: A constituent in Fox River Grove, IL

November 6

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed temporary ban on hemp-derived THC products. As a constituent concerned about personal freedom and economic growth, I urge you to reject this misguided attempt to stifle a burgeoning industry. The coalition of alcohol industry associations pushing for this ban is clearly motivated by self-interest rather than genuine concern for public safety. Their call for removing hemp-derived THC products from the marketplace is a thinly veiled attempt to eliminate competition, not protect consumers. The 2018 Farm Bill's language on hemp was intentionally crafted to allow for innovation and growth in the hemp industry. This has led to the development of new products that consumers desire and that contribute to local economies. A ban would not only harm businesses but also deprive adults of their right to choose these products. Claims that the current market is entirely unregulated are exaggerated. Many states have already implemented their own regulatory frameworks to ensure product safety and quality. A federal ban would undermine these efforts and create unnecessary economic hardship for farmers, processors, and retailers who have invested in this industry in good faith. Instead of a ban, I urge you to work towards sensible federal regulations that build upon existing state frameworks. This approach would address any legitimate safety concerns while preserving the economic benefits of the hemp industry. It's crucial to distinguish between the need for proper regulation and the alcohol industry's desire to eliminate competition. The alcohol associations' willingness to work with Congress should be viewed skeptically. Their primary goal is to protect their market share, not to ensure a safe and diverse marketplace for adult consumers. I ask that you stand firm against this proposed ban and instead support legislation that provides clear, fair regulations for hemp-derived THC products. This would protect both consumer choice and the livelihoods of those in the hemp industry while addressing any valid safety concerns. Thank you for your attention to this important issue.
