An Open Letter

To: Sen. Slotkin, Sen. Peters, Rep. McClain

From: A constituent in Chesterfield, MI

February 11, 2025

I am writing as a concerned constituent to strongly urge you to uphold Michigan’s fair wage law and resist any attempts to dismantle it. The protections put in place to ensure that workers receive a living wage are vital to the well-being of Michigan’s economy and communities. Rolling back these hard-won advancements would be a direct attack on working families who rely on fair compensation to support themselves. I especially want to emphasize the importance of ensuring that restaurant servers and other tipped workers receive a full minimum wage plus tips, rather than having tips serve as a substitute for fair pay. Relying solely on tips creates financial instability and leaves workers vulnerable to wage theft, unpredictable income, and exploitation. No one should have to depend on the generosity of customers to earn a livable wage—especially when the cost of living continues to rise. Fair wages are not just a worker’s issue; they are a Michigan issue. When workers earn fair pay, they reinvest in their local communities, strengthen small businesses, and reduce reliance on public assistance programs. Keeping and improving our wage laws is both an economic and moral imperative. I urge you to stand with Michigan’s working families and defend the fair wage law. Please protect the progress we’ve made and ensure that all workers—especially those in the restaurant industry—receive fair compensation that reflects the dignity of their labor. I look forward to your response and to seeing your commitment to protecting Michigan workers.
