Congress needs to pass comprehensive federal AI regulation now, before the technology outpaces any meaningful oversight. AI systems are already making consequential decisions about people's employment, credit, housing, and medical care, with no transparency requirements, no accountability standards, and no federal framework to challenge those decisions. That gap is not theoretical — it is harming people today.
Other major economies are not waiting. The EU's AI Act is already in force. Without federal action, the U.S. ends up with a patchwork of state laws that corporations will exploit and consumers will lose in. I want to see you champion binding federal legislation that requires algorithmic transparency, mandates human oversight for high-stakes AI decisions, and creates real enforcement mechanisms with teeth. Voluntary industry guidelines have failed. It is time for the law to catch up.
