Tariffs are Not Good Economic Policy

To: Sen. Britt, Rep. Rogers, Sen. Tuberville

From: A constituent in Auburn, AL

April 9

I'm writing once again, this time with growing fear and outrage over the reckless tariff policies pushed forward by the Republican administration. These measures are already hurting everyday Americans—people like me and the vast majority of your constituents. Tariffs aren’t an abstract strategy or a show of economic strength. They are a direct hit to the wallets of working families. When the cost of imported goods goes up, corporations pass those increases on to consumers. It’s that simple. Middle- and lower-income households—those who already stretch every dollar—are left paying more for groceries, utilities, electronics, and even basic necessities. And let’s be clear: the wealthy are shielded. They have the cushion, the connections, the access to shop around or outsource needs. But regular Alabamians don’t. Many of us live on fixed incomes, or are raising kids while juggling multiple jobs. These tariffs are an attack on financial stability for families who are already doing everything right just to stay afloat. What’s even more frustrating is that there is no clear plan. No timeline, no accountability, and no support to offset the burden being placed squarely on our shoulders. This is not sound economic policy—it’s political theater with devastating real-world consequences. I demand that you push back on these tariffs, loudly and clearly. We deserve better than being used as pawns in a trade war that benefits no one but the powerful.
