I write to express deep concern over Israel’s recent actions in Lebanon, which have caused extensive civilian casualties and clearly violate international law. I urge immediate action, including sanctions on Israel and suspension of arms shipments, pending a full investigation.
On September 17, 2024, a series of coordinated explosions, reportedly tied to Israeli military operations, rocked Lebanon. The explosions, targeting Hezbollah pagers, killed at least nine people and wounded nearly 3,000, including many civilians. Hospitals were overwhelmed, with over 200 people critically injured. Non-combatants, including bystanders in Beirut and Sidon, were among the victims, pushing the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health to declare a medical emergency .
Human rights groups have voiced serious concerns about the indiscriminate nature of these attacks. Lama Fakih, Director at Human Rights Watch, stressed that such operations violate international law, which requires distinction between military targets and civilians. The use of explosives that cannot be precisely located is unlawful and indiscriminate, endangering civilians and combatants alike.
These actions show a dangerous disregard for civilian life and fundamental legal principles. The United States must respond as a global leader committed to human rights, holding Israel accountable for these violations.
I strongly urge the following actions:
1. Suspend U.S. arms shipments to Israel until a thorough and impartial investigation occurs.
2. Impose sanctions on Israeli officials and entities responsible, per international accountability standards.
3. Support an international inquiry to determine if these actions constitute war crimes and ensure justice for the victims.
Failing to respond undermines our credibility and sets a dangerous precedent for future conflicts. The U.S. must lead by example, promoting accountability and the rule of law.
Thank you for addressing this urgent issue. I hope to see swift action that upholds our nation’s commitment to human rights and international law.
