Reverse rash USAID personnel recall, prioritize ethical development

To: Sen. Ossoff, Sen. Warnock, Pres. Trump, Rep. Collins

From: A constituent in Athens, GA

February 5

The Trump administration's decision to recall nearly all USAID personnel from overseas assignments is a misguided move that will undermine American interests abroad and damage critical humanitarian and development efforts. Withdrawing these dedicated public servants from the field threatens to disrupt programs that promote global health, economic growth, and stability – goals that directly benefit U.S. national security. This reckless action jeopardizes decades of progress made through USAID initiatives that have saved millions of lives by fighting disease, improving education and infrastructure, and fostering democratic governance in partner nations. Abandoning this vital work will cede influence to strategic rivals like China and Russia while eroding America's standing as a global leader. The abrupt recall lacks transparency, as lawmakers from both parties assert Congressional approval is required to shutter an independent agency like USAID. This overreach by the administration raises concerning legal and constitutional questions. Recalling personnel on such short notice will also waste significant taxpayer funds due to the logistical turmoil. For the sake of American leadership, national interests, and human dignity around the world, I urge you to use your authority to reverse this reckless decision and allow USAID's essential personnel to continue their important work improving lives and cultivating stability overseas. The American people deserve diplomacy and foreign assistance that prioritizes security through ethical development solutions, not rash policies that abdicate our role on the global stage.
