I am deeply concerned by reports that a second detainee has died in less than two months at the Winn Correctional Center immigration detention facility in Louisiana. According to reporting by the Associated Press, recent inspection findings at the facility identified unsanitary conditions, deficiencies in medical care, and the use of excessive force. These allegations, combined with multiple deaths in a short period, raise serious questions about detainee safety and oversight.
Regardless of a person's immigration status, individuals held in government custody are entitled to humane treatment, adequate medical care, and protection from abuse. When people die in detention, there must be transparency, accountability, and a thorough independent investigation into the circumstances.
I urge you to support immediate congressional oversight of conditions at Winn Correctional Center and other ICE detention facilities, including public disclosure of inspection reports, medical care standards, staffing levels, and incident reviews. Congress has a responsibility to ensure that facilities operating under federal authority meet basic standards of safety and human dignity.
Please let me know what actions you will take to address these concerns and prevent further loss of life in immigration detention.
