Decisive action needed to prevent school gun violence tragedies

To: Sen. Durbin, Sen. Duckworth, Pres. Biden, Rep. Budzinski

From: A constituent in Springfield, IL

September 5

The devastating shooting at Apalachee High School is another devastating tragedy that shows that inaction is not acceptable. The senseless loss of young lives and the trauma inflicted on survivors is a harsh reminder that we must take urgent action to address gun violence in our nation. While we grieve the victims, it is imperative that we channel our grief into tangible steps to prevent such tragedies from recurring. I implore you to prioritize comprehensive gun reform legislation that strengthens background checks, bans assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, implements red flag laws, and funds research into gun violence prevention. These common-sense measures are supported by the vast majority of Americans and have been proven effective in reducing gun violence in states that have implemented them. The epidemic of gun violence in our schools and communities demands bold leadership and a commitment to put public safety above special interests. We owe it to the victims, their families, and all Americans to take decisive action and implement meaningful gun reforms that will make our nation safer. The time for thoughts and prayers alone has long passed – we need action.
