The proposal from El Salvador to host U.S. citizens in their prison facilities is deeply concerning and a clear violation of human rights and legal norms. Deporting violent criminals who are U.S. citizens to serve time in another country's penal system would unlawfully strip them of their citizenship rights. The United States has an obligation to uphold due process and humane treatment for all individuals, regardless of their crimes. Moreover, outsourcing immigration detention to the notoriously abusive CECOT prison in El Salvador raises grave humanitarian concerns. I urge you to reject this unlawful proposition outright and ensure that all persons, including undocumented immigrants and citizens convicted of crimes, are treated in accordance with domestic and international laws while serving sentences within U.S. jurisdiction. Upholding human rights and the rule of law must remain paramount.
