It is deeply concerning that President Trump is threatening to revoke the citizenship of American citizens who criticize his administration. Revoking citizenship based on political disagreements goes against fundamental democratic principles and the First Amendment right to free speech. Trump's threat to strip Rosie O'Donnell of her citizenship simply for criticizing his handling of disaster forecasting agencies is a dangerous overreach of executive power. The President cannot unilaterally revoke the citizenship of natural-born Americans like O'Donnell who was born in New York. Doing so would set a chilling precedent of punishing dissent and stifling free expression. This disturbing rhetoric from the President undermines civil liberties and democratic norms. Citizenship is a constitutional right that should never be wielded as a political weapon against critics and opponents. I urge you to speak out forcefully against these unacceptable threats and reaffirm that American citizens cannot have their citizenship revoked for exercising their free speech rights to criticize elected leaders. Protecting the sanctity of citizenship and the First Amendment must be upheld as essential pillars of our democracy.
