I am writing to urge you to reject Paul Ingrassia's nomination to lead the Office of Special Counsel. The recent revelations about Mr. Ingrassia's racist text messages and his associations with known White nationalists make him entirely unfit for this crucial position.
The Office of Special Counsel is responsible for protecting federal whistleblowers and enforcing civil service laws. It requires a leader of unimpeachable character and judgment. Mr. Ingrassia's reported statements about having "a Nazi streak" and his arguments against Martin Luther King Jr. Day demonstrate a profound lack of both.
While Mr. Ingrassia's lawyer has questioned the authenticity of these messages, the controversy surrounding his nomination extends beyond these texts. His history of promoting conspiracy theories and making controversial statements raises serious concerns about his ability to lead an independent agency fairly and impartially.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune has already stated that Ingrassia's nomination is "not going to pass." Senator Rick Scott of Florida, a fellow Republican, has declared his opposition. This bipartisan concern underscores the gravity of the situation.
The Office of Special Counsel plays a vital role in maintaining the integrity of our federal government. Appointing someone with a history of racist remarks and questionable associations would undermine the agency's credibility and effectiveness. It would send a dangerous message about the values we uphold in our public institutions.
I urge you to take a stand against racism and prejudice by opposing Paul Ingrassia's nomination. Our government agencies, especially those tasked with protecting whistleblowers and enforcing civil service laws, must be led by individuals who respect and value all Americans, regardless of their race or background.
The upcoming confirmation hearing before the Senate Homeland Security Committee is an opportunity to demonstrate your commitment to these principles. I ask that you voice your opposition to this nomination and vote against advancing it out of committee. Our nation deserves better than a nominee with such a troubling history.
