Restore Congressional oversight on Israel arms sales

To: Rep. Balint, Sen. Welch, Sen. Sanders

From: A constituent in Stowe, VT

March 4

The Trump administration's repeated use of emergency authorities to bypass congressional review of major arms sales to Israel is deeply concerning. Circumventing the established process undermines principles of checks and balances and transparency. The decision to send over $4 billion in weapons, including thousands of 2,000-pound bombs widely criticized as unsuitable for urban warfare in densely populated Gaza, without proper oversight is reckless and unacceptable. I urge you to take immediate action to halt these unilateral arms transfers and reinstate Congress' role in scrutinizing foreign weapons sales as mandated by law. The people's elected representatives must have a voice in decisions with far-reaching consequences for human rights and regional stability. Allowing the executive branch to systematically bypass congressional review sets a dangerous precedent that enables future administrations to potentially arm human rights abusers without accountability. Upholding democratic norms and human rights principles must take precedence over attempts to bypass constitutional constraints. I implore you to use your authority to prevent further erosion of Congress' oversight responsibilities on this critical issue. The American people deserve full transparency regarding the arming of foreign powers, especially when such arms could enable violence against civilians. Restore the proper procedures and stand up for human rights.
