Education debt functions as a wildly burdensome and excessive tax levied against those pursuing entry into the middle class. It perpetuates a cycle of inequality that prohibits indebted parents from helping their own children attend college.
Consequently, these children also require loans for school, and then become indebted themselves.
We now have successive generations of Vermonters who are saddled with student debt that will be prevented from ever achieving real economic security — simply because they sought to better themselves through higher education.
This is backwards and it is wrong.
What then is your long term plan to provide Americans with comprehensive student loan relief? This problem is quietly reshaping our country, and yet seems to be all but ignored by those in congress who have the power to stop it.
